Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business? How SME Websites Gain Visibility in AI Search

Google AI Mode cites passages that answer a question in the first sentence. Five concrete GEO measures for SME websites.

A potential customer types "IT support Recklinghausen" into Google — and reads an AI-generated answer without visiting a single website. Another asks ChatGPT which accounting software it would recommend for small trade businesses in the Ruhr region — and gets three company names in response. Whether your business appears among them no longer depends solely on whether your website ranks on page one.

This phenomenon has a name: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). If you want to understand why website traffic is declining despite strong rankings — and what you can concretely do about it — this article is a practical starting point.

Note: This article provides a practical introduction and does not constitute professional SEO or legal advice.

What Has Changed — and Why Are Click-Through Rates Falling?

In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of all Google searches in the United States ended without a click on any external website — the highest level ever recorded (SparkToro/Similarweb clickstream panel, report of June 2026; SparkToro traditionally reports this figure to two decimal places). In Germany the figure is structurally lower, because Google AI Overviews appear less frequently: they currently appear on an estimated 15–25% of informational queries, but rarely on local or transactional ones (seotrust.de analysis of the German SERP market, April 2026). When they do appear, however, the top-ranking organic result loses on average 18–30% of its clicks for that query.

Traffic is not simply disappearing — it is shifting. For businesses cited inside the AI answer, the opposite can be true: multiple 2026 analyses show that cited brands on the same SERP receive around 35% more organic clicks than uncited competitors appearing on the same results page.

The decisive question is therefore no longer just "do I rank well?" but: "Which text passages on my website does an AI system select as an answer?"

How Does Google AI Mode Decide Which Passages to Cite?

According to a study by Pillarbase published via Search Engine Land on 29 July 2026, the analysis covers 15.7 million citations from Google AI Mode — the largest publicly available dataset on this topic to date. The findings are concrete:

  • 47.7% of citations are direct text-passage highlights (scroll-to-text), not simple page links.
  • The most frequently cited passages are a median 117 words long.
  • 80% of cited passages answer the search query in the first sentence — without requiring the reader to have any prior context.
  • 76% of cited pages rank organically at position 1 — a strong SEO foundation remains a prerequisite.

The AI system is not looking for sources that cover a topic comprehensively. It is looking for passages that answer a specific question immediately and independently. Content that begins with a lengthy preamble before reaching the point is correspondingly unlikely to be cited.

What Is GEO — and How Does It Differ from Classic SEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) refers to measures aimed at being selected as a source by generative AI systems — Google AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Bing Copilot.

The key difference from classic SEO: SEO optimises for crawl bots and ranking algorithms. GEO optimises for passage-selection algorithms that decide which specific sentence is displayed as an answer. The two disciplines complement each other — a page must first rank well organically before it can be considered for AI citations at all. GEO measures layer on top of SEO, not in place of it.

Five Measures That Make SME Websites Visible in AI Answers

1. Write headings as questions

Instead of "Our Services", write "What does an IT support contract cost for small businesses in the Ruhr region?" — this mirrors the actual search query. AI systems match question headings with the answer passage directly below them and preferentially select these for citations.

2. Write self-contained paragraphs — 75 to 150 words, answer first

Each paragraph should state its core point in the first sentence, without requiring prior context. The Pillarbase findings are unambiguous: paragraphs of around 117 words with a direct opening are cited disproportionately often. A paragraph that starts with "To understand this, one must first consider…" is filtered out.

3. Include verifiable facts with source references

AI systems favour pages that state concrete, checkable figures and name their sources. A sentence like "According to the BSI Security Report 2025, 72% of German companies were affected by cyberattacks" is more citable than "many companies are affected". This applies to your own practical experience as well: concrete project sizes, timelines and cost ranges make a page more credible — and therefore more attractive to AI citations.

4. Implement FAQPage schema

Structured data (FAQPage markup according to schema.org) helps Google and other AI systems to identify question-and-answer pairs programmatically. Implementation is straightforward for most CMS platforms — WordPress, Craft CMS, Statamic — via a plugin or template snippet. Statically generated websites can output FAQPage markup in the HTML head as well.

5. Maintain a complete Google Business Profile and build brand mentions

Multiple GEO analyses from 2026 show that a significant share of local AI recommendations from ChatGPT and Perplexity is based on publicly available business data — including Google Business Profiles. Businesses in Recklinghausen and the Ruhr region that want to be found via local queries benefit directly: a complete profile with opening hours, a service overview, photos and regular posts measurably improves the chances of appearing in local AI answers. Consistent mentions in trade directories, local press and LinkedIn further strengthen entity recognition.

What About ChatGPT, Perplexity and Bing Copilot?

The passage-selection logic is similar across all major generative search systems: all favour short, self-contained answer passages with verifiable facts, stable URLs and authority. Optimising for Google AI Mode generally improves your chances with ChatGPT Search and Perplexity at the same time.

One difference lies in data protection: if you use ChatGPT for business purposes and want to remain GDPR-compliant, the article on GDPR-compliant ChatGPT use covers data processing agreements, Team vs. Free accounts and EU data residency options. For businesses that want to formally specify which AI tools staff may use, a written AI usage policy has been required by the EU AI Act since 2 August 2026.

Five Questions That Website Owners Regularly Ask

Does the entire website need to be rewritten?
No. GEO optimisation is most effective when applied first to pages that already rank well — there the step into AI answers is smallest. Priority targets are service pages, advisory articles and existing FAQ pages.

Does GEO help even without a top ranking on Google?
Only to a limited extent. Since 76% of cited pages rank at position 1, a solid SEO foundation is a prerequisite. GEO measures alone cannot move a page from position 20 into AI answers.

Does AI-generated content on the website cause harm?
Not automatically — quality is what matters. Thin, generic text without verifiable facts is rarely cited by AI systems. Fact-rich, specific content — regardless of how it was produced — is preferred.

How long does it take for GEO measures to show results?
Structural changes such as FAQPage schema or a revised paragraph structure can lead to citations within a few weeks once the page has been recrawled and re-indexed — faster than a conventional SEO campaign.

What difference does a Google Business Profile make for local AI searches?
A significant one. ChatGPT and Perplexity rely heavily on publicly available business data for local queries — including Google Business Profiles. Without a complete profile, AI systems often lack the data needed to mention a business at all.
